Upholding Gendered Peace at a Time of War: Academics and Activists Speak Out on the Shifting Places of Women in the Arab World

IWSAW organized an international conference titled “Upholding Gendered Peace at a Time of War: Academics and Activists Speak Out on the Shifting Places of Women in the Arab World” from June 8-11, 2015. The international conference was organized in collaboration with the Women in War, and Beit El-Hanan, and in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Rule of Law Program MENA Region, the Danish Centre for Research and Information on Gender, Equality, and Diversity (KVINFO), and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.

The conference hosted scholars, researchers, activists, policy makers, parliamentarians, and students from various Arab countries (Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Libya), the US, and Europe working on issues related to gender and armed conflict, Islamic radicalism, human rights, sexual abuse, as well as peace building initiatives. The goal of the conference was to examine the issue of gender and armed conflicts from all its angles, highlight the damaging effects of war on women, discuss sustainable peace, and learn from the experiences of other countries.

Through its academic papers, testimonials, case studies, and discussions, the conference combined theory and practice to highlight issues related to the globalization of war, gender and religious fanaticism, sexual violence and the damaging effects of armed conflict on women.

The conference hosted two renowned keynote speakers: Dr. Nawal El-Saadawi and Dr. Valentine Moghadam.

The event brought together representatives of NGOs, governmental institutions, international organizations and UN agendcies, gender experts and researchers, students, as well as media personnel.
